As important as it is to stay hydrated, sometimes slugging down another cup of water feels like a chore. Whenever that happens, I try to add some interest to my cup—a strawberry milk tea with chewy boba, a banana-free raspberry smoothie, or an elegant glass of lavender lemonade are all more than enough to banish the boredom.

Lately my daughter and I have been on a berry kick, crushing handfuls at a time like it’s our job. So, when I opened my freezer the other day and saw a big ol’ bag of frozen raspberries, then glanced over at my fruit bowl filled with lemons, a lightbulb went off. Clearly the universe wanted me to make a batch of raspberry pink lemonade!

This deliciously simple sipper was the result, and it’s been playing on repeat in our house ever since. You can make it sparkling or still, or add a shot of vodka for happy hour. No matter how you choose to imbibe, you’re sure to love it!

    What is pink lemonade?

The only certain thing about pink lemonade is that it’s a citrusy drink that is pink. But where the cheerful hue comes from can vary widely—it can come from fruit like raspberries, strawberries, or cherries; it can come from grenadine or another flavored syrup; sometimes it’s from added juices; some recipes even call for cinnamon candies! This particular recipe uses homemade raspberry syrup (made with real raspberries!) to add sweetness, berry flavor, and that beautiful magenta hue.

    What does it taste like?

If you could distill a sunny day with your besties into a cup, this raspberry lemonade would be the result. It’s puckery-tart thanks to plenty of freshly squeezed lemon juice, but is balanced out by the sweet sugariness of raspberry simple syrup. You can taste the juicy flavor of berries and bright acidity of lemons in every sip!

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Raspberry Lemonade Recipe

    • Wholesomely Sweet – Rather than reaching for a soda filled with HFCS, artificial dyes, and weird chemical components, try making this fresh, simple sipper as a better-for-you substitute! All you need are lemons, raspberries, sugar, and water.
    • Bright & Beautiful – It’s nearly impossible to frown when you have a glass of fantastically fuschia lemonade in hand! Next time you need a little joy in your life, make a batch and feel that frown turn upside down.
    • Quick & Easy – All told, you only need about 10 minutes in the kitchen to make a batch of raspberry lemonade—that fresh fruity flavor is worth every minute. There’s nothing like it!

    Ingredients Needed

As promised, we’re using minimal ingredients to make this refreshing drink:

    • Fresh Lemon Juice – “Fresh” is the operative word here—the bottled stuff isn’t even in the same league.
    • Water – If possible, start with filtered water for the best taste.
    • Raspberry Syrup – My easy homemade recipe requires just raspberries (fresh or frozen), water, and granulated sugar.

    Substitutions

Need to make some changes? Here are a few ideas:

    • Fresh Lemon Juice – Fresh lime juice would be a fun twist. Doesn’t raspberry limeade sound like a treat?!?
    • Water – Add some sparkle to your sip by swapping in club soda or seltzer water.
    • Raspberry Syrup – This strawberry simple syrup would also make a lovely pink lemonade!

    How To Make Raspberry Lemonade

Step 1: Squish Lemons. Start by rolling the lemons firmly with your hand on a hard surface to loosen the juice.

Step 2: Juice Lemons. Cut the rolled lemons in half and juice using a juicer.

Step 3: Add the water to a pitcher.

Step 4: Add the lemon juice to the water.

Step 5: Sweeten the lemon water with the raspberry syrup. Stir until combined.

Step 6: Pour over ice and serve!

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

    • Blue Raspberry Lemonade – While there’s no such thing as blue raspberries, you can make blue raspberry lemonade by adding a few spoonfuls of butterfly pea flower. The acidity in the lemon juice turns it more purple than blue, but my daughter still loves it! 🦋
    • Sugar-Free – Use (or make) sugar-free raspberry syrup to keep this lemonade sugar-free and diabetic-friendly.
    • Sparkling – Swap in sparkling water or plain or flavored seltzer water for a fun soda substitute.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Frozen Raspberry Lemonade – Freeze half your batch of pink lemonade in an ice cube tray. Once it’s frozen, add all the ice cubes and the remainder of the lemonade to a blender and blitz until frothy and creamy.
    • Raspberry Lemonade Cocktail Hour – Raspberry vodka lemonade sounds pretty great come 5 o’clock. Just sayin’! 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you’re more of a mocktail sort, try making a ginger ale raspberry lemonade—it’s surprisingly slurp-worthy.
    • Gorgeous Garnishes – Add fresh or frozen raspberries and a few lemon wheels to the pitcher for added visual appeal (and a fun snack at the end of your cup). A sprig of fresh mint or basil is also welcome!
    • Food Pairings – Since this berry lemonade is sweet and tart, it’s a great match for savory foods. Think: anything you’d find at a cookout, BBQ, or fair!

    Storage Instructions

    • Pink raspberry lemonade will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
    • It can be frozen for up to 6 months, then defrosted whenever you’re feeling thirsty. (Like I mentioned earlier, it also makes great flavored ice cubes or popsicles!)

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Fresh or Frozen – My clients often ask me if fresh or frozen fruit is healthier. Stop fretting—they’re both great for you! I typically recommend grabbing frozen fruit when it is out of season, as the berries are picked at peak ripeness and flash frozen, retaining the vast majority of nutrients. They’re also typically cheaper than out-of-season fresh berries.
    • Frozen Lemons – Did you know you can freeze citrus whole? It’s true! If you ever end up with leftovers, toss them in the freezer for later. As a bonus, they’re way easier to juice once they defrost and you don’t need to roll them on the counter!
    • Freeze Leftovers – Okay, apparently I’m on a cold kick over here. If you end up with more lemonade than you can handle, feel free to freeze the leftovers into ice cubes (great for adding color and brightness to your drinks) or popsicles.

    Homemade Raspberry Lemonade Nutrition

A glass of this magenta masterpiece will only set you back about 138 calories—not too shabby considering how flavorful it is. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of those calories come from sugars—each glass has 36 grams of carbs, only 1 of which is fiber. If you’d like to lighten things up, follow along with my instructions for making sugar-free raspberry lemonade above!

There’s zero fat, zero protein, and just 10 milligrams of sodium, so nothing to worry about on those fronts. Like I said, it’s light and lovely so you can enjoy every sip.

And, while this is by no means a “health food,” freshly made raspberry lemonade does have some nutritional virtue—there’s plenty of vitamin C (one serving can supply up to 92% of your RDV), a decent amount of potassium (about 37 milligrams per serving), and a skosh of antioxidants like anthocyanins from the raspberry syrup.

Total nutritional content per serving is:

    • Total Fat: 0 grams
    • Protein: 0 grams
    • Sodium: 10 mg
    • Carbohydrates: 36 grams
    • Fiber: 1 gram

    Pricing Info

This is what I personally paid to make this recipe:

    • ½ cup fresh lemon juice (about 3-4 lemons): $1.52
    • 3 cups water: $0.00
    • 1 cup raspberry syrup: $0.92

The total comes out to be around $2.44 or about $0.61 per serving!

    FAQs

Where does raspberry lemonade come from?

I’m honestly not sure who had the brilliant idea to mix raspberries and lemonade in the first place, but I wholeheartedly thank them for their contribution to humanity.

Is raspberry lemonade the original pink lemonade?

There are conflicting stories about the original pink lemonade, neither of which include raspberries. One origin story asserts that a circus worker named Henry E. Allot accidentally dropped a bunch of cinnamon candies into a batch of lemonade. Rather than tossing the batch, he sold it as “pink lemonade,” which was a smashing success.

Another story attributes the drink to a fella named Pete Conklin and his less-than-sanitary practices. In this story, Pete accidentally used water that had been dyed pink by a performer’s red tights. Since lemons were expensive, he opted to sell the drink as “strawberry lemonade,” apparently doubling his sales. I don’t know about you, but I think I prefer my version better than both of the originals!

Is raspberry lemonade good for you?

“Good for you” might be a stretch considering there’s a fair amount of sugar in there. That said, this all-natural homemade raspberry lemonade is far healthier than most bottled drinks, which are loaded with dyes, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. Plus, there’s a lot of vitamin C in there thanks to all the lemon juice!
