We all know how important it is to hydrate, but even as an RDN, hitting daily drinking goals can feel like a chore. When I can’t bear to slug down another glass of tap water, I’m all for using sweetness as a slurping incentive—particularly if the sweet drink is made with fresh fruit and zero artificial ingredients like this fresh blackberry lemonade.

Each vibrant glass of puckery-sweet goodness is packed to the brim with flavor, but requires just a handful of ingredients to make—blackberries, lemons, sugar, and water. Better yet, that all-natural gorgeous garnet hue indicates the presence of antioxidants known as anthocyanins—a nice nutritional boost in addition to vitamin C.

    What is blackberry lemonade?

Lemonade—a mix of lemon juice, sugar, and water—has been part of human history for over 1000 years, with written references as early as the 10th century in Cairo. Since that first mention, some variety of this citrusy drink has emerged in nearly every culinary tradition—from French citron pressé to Indian and Pakistani kala namak and North African cherbat.

Here in the US, strawberry-infused pink lemonade became all the rage in the early 1900s. This fun twist swaps in blackberries for a lovely tannic infusion I think you’re going to love!

    What does it taste like?

If a sun-soaked blackberry briar could be distilled into a glass, this would be it. Each sip is bright and zippy thanks to a hefty dose of tart lemon juice, but the acidity is tempered by sugared berry sweetness from the homemade blackberry simple syrup. The blackberries add a faint whisper of tannic dryness, giving basic lemonade a complex astringency that’ll have you coming back for more.

Why You’ll Love This Blackberry Lemonade Recipe

    • Sweet & Simple – All told, you only need 4 ingredients to make a juicy pitcher of blackberry lemonade from scratch—including water!
    • Budget-Friendly – Groceries aren’t cheap these days, and spending $5+ on a jug of store-bought lemonade might feel a bit cavalier. Luckily, this homemade version costs just over 60 cents per glass—and you get a pile of sweet berry pulp to swirl into yogurt or spoon over ice cream when you’re done.
    • Better-For-You Choice – Canned and bottled drinks are often sweetened with hyper-processed corn syrup, colored with dye, and have added preservatives. This homemade berry lemonade is made with only real, easily-pronounceable ingredients and none of the junk.

    Ingredients Needed

As promised, you don’t need much to make this sweet sipper. Here’s what to grab:

    • Fresh Lemon Juice – “Fresh” is the operative word here—the bottled kind can’t hold a candle to the real stuff. In total, you’ll need 3-4 lemons.
    • Water – Start with filtered water for the best tasting results.
    • Blackberry Syrup – While you can certainly use store-bought syrup, my homemade version is a snap to make with just berries, sugar, and water.

    Substitutions

Need to make some changes? I’ve got you covered! Here are some easy swaps to try:

    • Fresh Lemon Juice – Try using fresh lime juice instead—blackberry limeade is the bomb!
    • Water – Swap in sparkling water or club soda to make a delicious sparkling blackberry lemonade seltzer.
    • Blackberry Syrup – You’re welcome to sweeten your lemonade with any flavor of simple syrup you prefer—this strawberry syrup is another favorite.

How To Make Blackberry Lemonade From Scratch

This refreshing summery drink comes together in just a few simple steps:

Step 1: Roll the lemons firmly with your hand on a hard surface to loosen the juice.

Step 2: Squeeze. Cut the lemons in half and juice them using a juicer.

Step 3: Add the water to a pitcher.

Step 4: Pour in the lemon juice.

Step 5: Stir in the blackberry syrup. Stir until combined.

Step 6: Pour the completed blackberry lemonade over ice and serve!

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

    • Sugar-Free – Make your blackberry simple syrup with your favorite cup-for-cup sugar alternative (e.g. monkfruit) or use store-bought sugar-free flavoring syrup.
    • Herby – Toss a few sprigs of your favorite fresh herbs in the pot when making your blackberry syrup—blackberry basil lemonade, blackberry mint lemonade, and blackberry sage lemonade are all garden party approved!
    • Frozen Blackberry Lemonade – Freeze half the batch of lemonade in an ice cube tray while the rest hangs out in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve, blend the lemonade ice cubes with the rest of the pitcher to create a smoothie-like consistency.
    • Blackberry Hibiscus Lemonade – Instead of using plain water to make your lemonade, start with a pot of chilled hibiscus (jamaica) iced tea for an added pop of tartness and bright pink color.
    • Spiked Blackberry Lemonade Cocktail – Ready for a happier hour? Add a tipple of vodka, tequila blanco, or white rum for a supremely satisfying adults-only drink.

    Serving Suggestions

This refreshing glass of yum is a delight all on its own, but there are a few ways to add a little extra sparkle to your day:

    • Garnishes – Add some fresh berries and a lemon wheel to the glass for a blackberry lemonade mocktail vibe. The fresh components add a visual component that feels special, plus I love having a little snack waiting for me at the end of the glass. Feel free to add a sprig of fresh herbs for a pretty color combo!
    • Sweet Rims – Make each sip a little sweeter with a lemon sugar rim. Mix the zest from your lemons with sugar on a shallow plate, then rub the outside rim of your glass with half of a juiced lemon. Dip the rim into the lemon sugar, then pour in your blackberry lemonade.
    • Blue Raspberry Lemonade – Add a spoonful of butterfly pea powder to your glass for a pretty blue tint that’s all-natural.
    • Lemonade Bar – Hosting a get together? Make a double, triple, or quadruple batch of blackberry lemonade and serve it in a punch bowl for your guests to help themselves. Don’t forget an ice bucket, a few varieties of clear spirits for spiking, and an assortment of garnishes.
    • Berry N-ice – Add some color and panache to your glass by making your ice cubes with assorted berries and edible flowers.

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Seasonal Smarts – Remember that fruit and veggies are generally much cheaper when they are in season in your area because they don’t have to travel nearly as far. If blackberries aren’t in season, check the frozen aisle—it’s likely they’ll be less expensive and will taste better.
    • Save for Later – Stock up on lemons whenever they’re on sale, then toss them into the freezer whole. While they won’t be great for slicing into wedges or wheels, they’ll juice like a dream after defrosting!
    • Waste Not, Want Not – When you’re working on a budget, it’s especially important to get the most out of your ingredients and eliminate as much food waste as possible. Before juicing your lemons, use a vegetable peeler or rasp to capture all the lemon zest—it can either be frozen for later, or used to make lemon salt or lemon sugar. After squeezing, use the lemon halves to refresh your cutting boards or garbage disposal, or make a pitcher of lemon water. Similarly, save the blackberry pulp after straining your simple syrup—it’s delicious swirled into yogurt or oatmeal.

    Homemade Blackberry Lemonade Nutrition

At just 141 calories per serving, this blackberry lemonade is a refreshingly sweet treat that shouldn’t bust your diet goals. As with most juice-based drinks, it doesn’t have any fat or protein, and it only has 8 milligrams of sodium—barely a blip.

The primary thing to consider here are the carbs—you’re looking at 37 per glass, with just 1 gram of fiber. The majority of those carbs come from added sugars in the blackberry syrup, so if you’re looking to cut back, follow the instructions above for making a sugar-free variation. (If you go this route, you’ll also cut way back on the calories.) Alternatively, dilute the lemonade with 50% seltzer water for a lighter option.

While there is a decent amount of sugar per serving, you’re also getting some nutritional benefits from the fruit. Both lemon juice and berries are a great source of vitamin C, and blackberries are high in antioxidants known as anthocyanins. If you’re feeling under the weather, a glass can be a nice little boost for your immune system. You can also trade out the sugar in the blackberry syrup for honey, which is great for soothing sore throats.

All in all, this is a wholesome, sweet drink you can feel good about sharing with your family. Just make sure to balance out the rest of your day with lower-sugar options!

    FAQs

Is blackberry lemonade good for you?

“Good for you” might be a bit of a stretch since there is a decent amount of sugar in there. That said, I’d definitely consider it a “better-for-you” option compared to many other sweet drinks—especially bottled or packaged drinks that have artificial and/or highly-processed ingredients, preservatives, and dyes. For a deeper dive into the nutrition, jump down a section!

    Does blackberry lemonade have caffeine?

My recipe does not, but you are welcome to add a few drops of green tea extract or green coffee extract if you need a little extra get-up-and-go.

    Does lemon go with blackberry?

Heck yeah! Lemon pairs nicely with just about any kind of fruit, especially sweet-tart fruits like berries.

How should I store blackberry lemonade?

Keep any leftovers in a pitcher in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze the leftovers into ice cube trays or make popsicles, which should last up to 3 months in the freezer.
