    What does it taste like?

This chicken apple sausage skillet is sweet and savory, with hints of fresh thyme and cinnamon. The sweet potatoes and fresh apples add sweetness, while the chicken broth and sausage add salty and savory flavors.

Basically, this recipe is a chicken apple sausage stir fry with vegetables, fruits, and tons of delicious fall flavors.

    Ingredients

The ingredients needed to make chicken apple sausage skillet.

Avocado oil – This type of cooking oil is very mild in flavor while also being heart-healthy! It doesn’t add any flavor or overpower the amazing fall flavors in this sweet potato skillet.

Red onion – The color and flavor of the sliced red onion are incredible in this apple chicken sausage recipe. The beautiful purple color makes all the other colors pop in the skillet!

Garlic – What’s dinner without garlic? Make sure to mince it finely so you don’t get large chunks of garlic cloves and distract from all the other fall flavors in this apple chicken sausage recipe!

Sweet potato – Make sure to peel your sweet potato and dice it up in about 1/2 inch cubes. This will help it cook faster and ensure that it’s soft by the time the skillet is done, in about 25 minutes.

Fresh apples – Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisps are the apples to choose for this apple sausage skillet dinner. They’re sweet and extremely crisp, so they hold their shape and don’t get mushy in the skillet.

Chicken sausage links – Aidell’s Chicken and Apple Sausage links are precooked and work perfectly for this recipe. They’re gluten-free and add the best apple sausage flavor!

Fresh thyme – Adding fresh thyme to this chicken apple sausage recipe helps bring out the savory flavors of the onion and sausage links.

Cinnamon – A fall skillet dinner wouldn’t be complete without a sprinkle of cinnamon! This adds some sweetness to this recipe and brings out so many of the fall flavors.

Dried sage – Similar to the fresh thyme, the sage in this one-pan skillet dinner helps to accentuate the savory flavors from the chicken apple sausage.

Low sodium chicken broth – A must for this recipe. The chicken broth adds some salt and a lot of moisture to help all the vegetables in this stir fry recipe finish cooking and become soft.

Kale – The addition of kale provides some texture to the fall skillet dinner, and beautiful green color, too!

    Substitutions

Avocado oil – Feel free to use the cooking oil of your choice, but keep in mind that if you use a more flavorful oil, it could alter the flavors in this apple chicken sausage recipe!

Red onion – Yellow or white onion would work just fine in this recipe, feel free to substitute that out if you don’t like red onion or don’t have one readily available.

Sweet potato – If you aren’t a sweet potato fan, you can swap it out for a white, yellow, or red potato if you’d like. Keep in mind that the skillet dinner won’t be as sweet if you don’t use sweet potatoes.

Fresh apples – Not everyone likes a sweet dinner recipe, so you can add less than two apples to your chicken sausage skillet dinner, or eliminate them altogether.

Apple chicken sausage links – Feel free to use any pre-cooked turkey, pork, or chicken sausage links that you’d like. Italian or spicy sausages would work great in this recipe! If you choose to use a raw sausage product, make sure to cook those separately and set them aside to add in later with apples and spices. You can also use ground meat, just make sure to cook it completely before making this fall skillet.

Low sodium chicken broth – Any broth will work for this recipe, but I’ve found that I prefer all of the broth I buy to be low-sodium. I would not recommend using water in place of broth, as it won’t help develop any of the flavors in the skillet and it may turn out a little bland.

Kale – If you’re not a kale fan, you can eliminate it or replace it with fresh spinach leaves instead!

    Instructions

    • Avocado oil being drizzled into a cast iron skillet.
    • Red onion and sweet potato being sauteed in one pan.
    • Apples, chicken apple sausge, cinnamon, and fresh herbs being added to the skillet.
    • Kale being added to the chicken apple sausage skillet.
    1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    2. Saute onion, garlic, and sweet potato together for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    3. Add apples, chicken apple sausage, fresh thyme, cinnamon, sage, and chicken broth, and saute for another 5 minutes.
    4. Add chopped kale, and toss until everything is combined. Cook on medium for another 2-3 minutes, until kale is wilted, then serve!

    Tips & FAQ

Is this chicken sausage skillet gluten-free?

Yes, it is, as long as you use gluten-free sausage links! All of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free!

How do I make this with raw sausage links?

To use raw sausage instead of pre-cooked sausage, make sure to cook your sausage links fully through before you make this apple sausage skillet dinner. Once cooked, slice them up and then set them aside to add in with the apples and spices.

    Is Aidell’s chicken sausage gluten-free?

Yes, it is! Aidell’s chicken sausage products are all-natural and gluten-free, making them a really healthy sausage product! Plus, they taste amazing!

    Nutritional Info

This chicken apple sausage stir fry is healthy, gluten-free, and low in carbohydrates and calories, too!

The apples and sweet potatoes add most of the carbohydrates to this skillet dinner, so if you are looking to make it an even lower carb meal, use less sweet potato and/or apples when you make this.

You can also reduce the sodium level of this dinner recipe by using a lower sodium sausage product or simply using pre-cooked ground chicken, beef, or turkey instead.

To increase the protein, add in more sausage. This will inevitably increase the amount of sodium and calories though, so just be aware of that if you’re trying to limit either of those nutrients.

Total nutritional content per serving is:

    Pricing Info

This is what I personally paid to make this recipe:

    • 2 tsp avocado oil: $0.06
    • ½ red onion: $0.37
    • 4 cloves garlic: $0.10
    • 1 medium sweet potato: $0.82
    • 2 Honeycrisp apples: $1.96
    • 12 oz Aidell’s Chicken Sausage: $5.18
    • 2 tsp fresh thyme: $0.40
    • 1 tsp cinnamon: $0.04
    • ½ tsp dried sage: $0.07
    • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth: $0.31
    • 2 cup kale: $0.44

The total to make this chicken apple sausage skillet comes out to be $9.75 or roughly $2.44 per serving!

Honeycrisp apples are probably the most expensive apple around, but here in the Byrd house, we absolutely love them and are willing to spend extra money to get them.

To reduce the cost of this recipe, use a less expensive type of apple, like Fuji or Gala.

      5 stars
Just made this delicious recipe tonight! It was SUPER easy and flavorful. We are not a kale-loving family- so I used spinach instead and my toddler couldn’t stop asking for more. Loved the Fall sweeter flavors mixed with sausage. Definitely a repeat meal for this family.
