America’s favorite cookie gets a festive makeover in this easy Christmas chocolate chip cookies recipe. Not only are there three kinds of chocolate (!!!), but also cute red and green M&Ms for a pop of color. And, while they might look like a million bucks, they’re actually super budget-friendly. I was able to make them for just 33 cents per cookie—in 2025 dollars!

Better yet, these loaded chocolate chip cookies are made in just one bowl using primarily pantry staples. All told, you’re looking at just 15 minutes of active time to make a batch! As if that weren’t enough to love, I’ve also healthified the recipe with whole grain flour. That simple swap adds a rustic, nutty flavor, plus 3 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber per serving.

Make a batch of these treats alongside other holiday favorites like my salty-sweet fluffernutter cookies, chewy apple cider cookies, and fudgy brownie crinkle cookies for an inexpensive and impressive homemade present anyone would be thrilled to receive!

    What do they taste like?

These loaded Christmas chocolate chip cookies taste like pure childhood joy. They’re soft and buttery in the center with crisp, golden edges—what I’d consider the perfect cookie texture. The mix of dark and white chocolate chips gives a lovely contrast of rich and creamy sweetness, while the festive red and green M&Ms add crunch and color.

Every bite delivers a beautiful balance of sweet, salty, and chocolatey flavors with a hint of holiday magic—like your favorite classic chocolate chip cookie all dressed up for Christmas.

Why You’ll Love This Christmas Cookie Recipe

    • Budget-Friendly – At just 33 cents a cookie, these tasty treats won’t break the bank. If you’re looking for inexpensive ways to treat your loved ones, bake up a batch!
    • Fabulously Festive – How can anyone resist the cheerful red and green color combo, especially when there’s chocolate involved?!?
    • Easy to Make – All you need are 12 simple ingredients (most of which are pantry staples), one bowl, and 15 minutes of prep time to make a batch. Suffice to say, Christmas came early with this speedy chocolate chip cookie recipe!
hands in a white sweater setting down a black serving tray of Christmas chocolate chip cookies decorated with extra green and red M&Ms and a few small red and green bows.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Unsalted Butter & Salt – Pro bakers start with unsalted butter and add salt to ensure consistency between batches. Salted butter can vary in terms of how salty it is!
    • Granulated Sugar & Brown Sugar – White sugar has a neutral pH and no moisture, while brown sugar is acidic and does have moisture. They create different chemical reactions, so you need to use both for the proper consistency.
    • Large Egg – Allow it to come to room temperature to make it easier to mix into the dough. If possible, use pasture-raised eggs, which are healthier than conventional.
    • Vanilla Extract – A staple of any chocolate chip cookie, vanilla adds warmth and depth.
    • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – My favorite better-for-you baking swap! It has the nutritional benefits of whole wheat flour, but bakes up closer to all-purpose flour consistency.
    • Baking Powder & Baking Soda – This dynamic leavening duo also offers different chemical reactions during baking, so make sure you use both.
    • White Chocolate Chips & Dark Chocolate Chips – I did say these Christmas cookies were loaded, right?!?
    • Christmas M&Ms – The merry combination of red and green M&Ms completes the holiday look, and ensures you get a trio of chocolate all in one bite!

    Substitutions

    • Unsalted Butter & Salt – Salted butter also works.
    • Granulated Sugar – You’re welcome to use less-processed pure cane sugar, or an equal amount of superfine/caster sugar.
    • Brown Sugar – Less processed muscovado or coconut sugar work just as well. You can also make your own brown sugar by mixing 1 cup of white sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of molasses.
    • Large Egg – I haven’t tried it, but cookies are typically a good place for swapping in vegan egg substitutes like flax eggs or JUST Eggs.
    • Vanilla Extract – Feel free to use an equal amount of vanilla paste or vanilla powder.
    • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – Swapping in a 50/50 blend of regular whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour will give you a nice balance between the nutritional benefit of whole grain flour and the lighter texture of AP flour.
    • White Chocolate Chips – For a fun, minty twist, try using peppermint chips or chopped Andes candies.
    • Dark Chocolate Chips – Semisweet or milk chocolate chips work, too!
    • Christmas M&Ms – For extra crunch and a hit of saltiness, try using Christmas colored peanut M&Ms.

How To Make Christmas Chocolate Chip Cookies

Step 1: Cream Butter & Sugar. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes.

Step 2: Wet Ingredients. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then beat again, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed to make sure everything is well incorporated.

Step 3: Add the Dry Ingredients and mix on low speed just until the dough comes together. Don’t overmix—that can make your cookies tough.

Step 4: Fold in the white and dark chocolate chips along with half of the M&Ms, stirring until evenly distributed.

Step 5: Divide the dough into 18 even balls, spacing them at least 3 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Decorate & Bake. Gently flatten each ball and press a few extra M&Ms on top for a festive finish. Bake at 350°F for 12-14 minutes, until the edges are golden and the centers look just set. Let the cookies cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Serve and enjoy!

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

    • Gluten-Free – Swap in your favorite cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend and allow the dough to rest for at least 30 minutes before baking to give it time to rehydrate. (This prevents a gritty texture.) If possible, opt for a blend that has xanthan gum.
    • Dairy-Free – Use your favorite plant-based butter to keep all the flavor without the dairy.
    • Vegan – I haven’t tried it, but cookie recipes typically work well with flax eggs or vegan liquid egg replacers. Remember to use vegan-friendly butter, as well.
    • Reduced Sugar – Swap in your favorite cup-for-cup white and brown sugar alternatives. You can take it a step further by swapping in sugar-free chocolate chips.
    • Hanukkah Chocolate Chip Cookies – Rather than using red and green M&Ms, swap in blue and white ones instead.

    Serving Suggestions

These loaded chocolate chip Christmas cookies are the ultimate holiday crowd-pleaser—perfect for cookie exchanges, classroom celebrations, Hallmark movie marathons, or leaving out for Santa with a glass of milk. Serve them slightly warm for gooey, melty chocolate centers, or let them cool for a chewier texture.

Pair them with a mug of your favorite hot chocolate, a peppermint mocha, or even a glass of eggnog for a decadent holiday dessert. For an extra festive touch, sandwich a scoop of vanilla or peppermint ice cream between two cookies for a Christmas ice cream sandwich that’ll wow both kids and adults.

They also make great edible gifts! Stack a few cookies in clear cellophane bags tied with ribbon, or arrange them on a festive platter alongside favorites like cranberry bliss bars and chewy molasses spice cookies for an irresistible holiday spread. Whether you’re gifting them, sharing them, or sneaking one for yourself, these loaded chocolate chip cookies are guaranteed to spread a little holiday cheer!

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Cookies on demand. For fresh-baked Christmas cookies anytime, freeze pre-portioned dough balls on a parchment-lined tray, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake straight from frozen, adding an extra minute or two to the bake time.
    • Room temperature ingredients. Make sure your butter and egg are at room temperature before mixing. This helps the dough come together smoothly and creates that perfect chewy, even texture.
    • Don’t overmix after adding dry ingredients. Mix just until the flour disappears. Overmixing can lead to tough cookies instead of soft, chewy ones.
    • Add a few M&Ms on top. Pressing extra M&Ms into the tops of your cookie dough balls before baking ensures every cookie looks festive and picture-perfect.
    • Use the swirl technique for round cookies. Right after baking, place a large round cookie cutter or glass over each cookie and gently swirl it in a circular motion. This pulls any uneven edges into a perfectly round shape, just like bakery cookies!

    Storage Directions

    • Room Temperature: Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. To keep them soft, place a slice of sandwich bread or tortilla in the container—it helps maintain moisture.
    • Refrigeration: If your kitchen runs warm, you can refrigerate the cookies for up to 1 week. Let them sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before serving to bring back their chewiness.
    • Freezing: Once completely cooled, freeze the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. They’ll keep for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm in a 300°F oven for 3-5 minutes to refresh them.
