    What do they taste like?

These heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies are everything you want in a cozy, feel-good treat—soft, chewy, and just indulgent enough without being overly sweet. The blend of granulated sugar and brown sugar creates lightly crisp edges with a tender, chewy center that melts in your mouth.

Flavor-wise, you get layers of rich vanilla and caramel notes from the blend of granulated and brown sugar, buttery depth with just enough salt to keep things balanced, and pockets of intense chocolate from the dark chocolate chips that melt into gooey little surprises. The M&Ms add a playful crunch and a touch of extra sweetness, making each bite feel extra festive.

The result is a cookie that tastes like a classic chocolate chip cookie at heart (pun intended!), but with a playful, festive twist that makes them perfect for Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s gatherings, or anytime you want to share a little love and joy with your favorite people.

Why You’ll Love This Valentine’s Day Cookie Recipe

    • Budget-Friendly – At just 30 cents per heart-shaped chocolate chip cookie, these little treats are an affordable luxury that won’t break the bank!
    • Crafty & Scrappy – Not only do my kids love to help with cutting the cookies into shapes, they also love getting to snack on the scraps that get cut off in the process. (Can’t say I blame them!)
    • Wholesome & Heartfelt – There’s something to be said about the charm of homemade gifts that feels even more special than something you could buy at the store. Don’t get me wrong—I’m never gonna be mad at a pound of locally roasted coffee beans or a sparkly tennis bracelet. But the thought and time that goes into making a batch of homemade heart cookies? It’s priceless!

    Ingredients Needed

    • Unsalted Butter & Salt – Starting with unsalted butter and adding salt to taste is the best way to ensure consistent results every time. If you can swing it, opt for grass-fed organic butter—it’s pricier, but also much healthier than conventional butter.
    • Granulated Sugar & Brown Sugar – These two sweeteners serve different roles, both in terms of flavor and the cool chemical reactions that happen in the oven. Make sure you use both! (Either light or dark brown sugar works.)
    • Large Eggs – Allow them to come to room temp for easier mixing.
    • Vanilla Extract – A hint of vanilla takes any cookie from good to great, adding much-needed depth and warmth.
    • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – My favorite sensible baking swap! You get a similar fluffy texture as with white flour, but with the nutrient density and lightly nutty flavor of whole grains.
    • Baking Powder & Baking Soda – You’ll need both types of leavener to ensure your heart-shaped cookies puff up to perfection.
    • Dark Chocolate Chips – Since we’re using both chocolate chips and M&Ms, I like to use dark chocolate chips to contrast with the milky-sweetness of the candy.
    • Pink & Red M&Ms – Because the only thing better than chocolate chip cookies is loaded chocolate chip cookies, amirite?

    Substitutions

    • Unsalted Butter & Salt – Only have salted butter? Go ahead and use it! Just note that you may not need to add any extra salt if you do.
    • Granulated Sugar – Pure cane sugar is a great alternative if you prefer something less-processed.
    • Brown Sugar – Make your own using white sugar mixed with brown sugar in a 1 cup to 1-2 tablespoon ratio (less for light, more for dark). Or, swap in less-processed alternatives like muscovado sugar if you like.
    • Large Eggs – If you’re using a different size of egg, note that each large egg is a scant ¼ cup. Alternatively, feel free to swap in your favorite egg alternatives for baking (e.g. flax eggs, chia eggs, or vegan egg replacer).
    • Vanilla Extract – You’re welcome to use an equal amount of vanilla paste or powder. Alternatively, add a fun twist by swapping in almond extract instead.
    • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – You can use a 50/50 blend of regular whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour for a close approximation. Or, use all AP flour, but note that you’ll miss out on the fiber.
    • Dark Chocolate Chips – Feel free to shake things up with any baking chips you prefer: white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, semisweet chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, mint chocolate chips… you get the idea.
    • Pink & Red M&Ms – Any color of M&Ms will do the trick!

How To Make Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookies

Step 1: Cream Butter & Sugars. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture looks light, fluffy, and creamy. This step sets the stage for soft, chewy cookies by aerating the dough, so don’t rush it.

Step 2: Add Eggs & Vanilla. Mix in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed so everything is evenly combined.

Step 3: Stir in Dry Ingredients. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, then mix just until a soft cookie dough forms. You’re looking for everything to come together—no dry streaks, but don’t overmix.

Step 4: Fold. Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips until they’re evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Step 5: Chill the Dough. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes. This helps the cookies hold their shape and bake up nice and thick.

Step 6: Scoop. Scoop out 18 evenly sized portions of dough and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets.

Step 7: Flatten. Use the palm of your hand to gently flatten each ball to about ¼-inch thickness.

Step 8: Decorate with M&Ms. Press a few pink and red M&Ms into the tops of each flattened cookie for a festive pop of color.

Step 9: Bake & Cut. Bake for 11-12 minutes, until the edges are just set and the centers still look soft. As soon as they come out of the oven, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut each cookie while they’re still warm (save those tasty scraps for snacking!). Let the cookies cool for 10-15 minutes before serving, then enjoy. 💕nfo.

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

    • Gluten-Free – Swap the whole wheat pastry flour for a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend that contains xanthan gum. Just be sure to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to give the grains time to rehydrate so they don’t taste gritty.
    • Dairy-Free – Use a dairy-free butter substitute, dairy-free chocolate chips, and dairy-free M&M-style chocolate candies.
    • Vegan – Follow the dairy-free instructions above and swap the eggs for a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 2½ tablespoons water per egg). Expect a slightly softer, more tender cookie with the same cozy chocolate flavor.
    • Different Shapes – Don’t stop at hearts! While the cookies are still warm, use any cookie cutter your honey loves—stars, circles, flowers, or other shapes to match the occasion or mood.
    • Different Colors – Change up the look by swapping the pink and red M&Ms for holiday-colored candies, pastel chocolate pieces, or even chopped candy bars. This recipe is easy to dress up for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, or any celebration!

    Serving Suggestions

Serve these heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies slightly warm with a glass of cold milk, a warm Starbucks copycat, or your favorite hot chocolate for the ultimate cozy treat. They’re perfect for Valentine’s Day dessert boards, tucked into lunchboxes as a sweet surprise, or packaged up in a cute box or cellophane bag for gifting. For a fun twist, layer the scrap pieces with fresh berries and Greek yogurt for a sweet-but-balanced snack parfait that feels extra special. 💕

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Don’t skip the chill time. Refrigerating the dough helps prevent spreading and makes the cookies easier to cut into clean heart shapes after baking.
    • Bake until just set. The centers should still look slightly soft when you pull them from the oven—this keeps the cookies tender and chewy as they cool.
    • Cut while warm. Use the heart-shaped cookie cutter immediately after baking, while the cookies are still hot and pliable, for the cleanest edges.
    • Save the scraps. Cutting food waste at home is an easy way to keep your grocery budget in check. Plus, why toss perfectly good cookie parts?!? Those extra bits from cutting are perfect for snacking, topping yogurt or ice cream, or folding into a yogurt parfait.
    • Press M&Ms on top, not inside. Adding the M&Ms after flattening the dough keeps their color vibrant and prevents cracking during baking.

    Storage Directions

    • Room Temperature: Store cooled heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. To keep them extra soft, you can add a small piece of bread to the container—the cookies will absorb the moisture without tasting like bread.
    • Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the baked cookies in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm briefly in the microwave for that fresh-baked feel.
    • Cookies on Demand: You can also freeze the unbaked cookie dough balls and bake straight from frozen, adding 1-2 extra minutes to the bake time.

Homemade Heart-Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookie Nutrition

These heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies strike a nice balance between indulgence and nourishment. Using whole wheat pastry flour adds a subtle nutritional upgrade compared to refined flour, contributing fiber, B vitamins, and minerals like magnesium. While cookies are still a treat, this swap helps make them a bit more satisfying and sustaining.

The combination of butter, eggs, and sugars provides the classic texture and flavor you expect, while also offering fat and a decent amount of protein that slow digestion and help with satiety. Dark chocolate chips bring antioxidants such as flavanols, which have been linked to heart health. The colorful M&Ms may not add nutrients, but they’re rich in fun and visual appeal!

Overall, these cookies fit beautifully into a balanced eating pattern when enjoyed mindfully. Pairing one or two cookies with a source of protein—like a glass of milk, Greek yogurt, or a protein-rich iced coffee—can help keep blood sugar more stable and turn this sweet treat into a more satisfying snack. Enjoy every heart-shaped bite!

    FAQs

What is the secret to making good chocolate chip cookies?

The secret to making good chocolate chip cookies is balance and timing. Use a mix of sugars for flavor and chew, don’t overmix the dough, and pull the cookies from the oven while the centers still look slightly underbaked. Chilling the dough and using quality chocolate also make a huge difference in both texture and flavor.

What is the secret ingredient to keeping cookies soft?

The secret ingredient to keeping cookies soft is brown sugar. Its higher moisture content (thanks to molasses) helps retain softness, especially when paired with enough fat and slightly underbaking the cookies so they finish setting as they cool.
