With Super Bowl around the corner and playoff games happening several times a week, we’re smack in the middle of dip season. From Instant Pot buffalo chicken dip to cranberry jalapeno dip, restaurant style salsa to this sassy strawberry salsa, there’s always something in the fridge ready for easy snacking.

And, while I love classic homemade salsa made with tomatoes, there’s something fresh and fun about swapping in spring berries. They have a similar acidity and sweetness, but with a certain je ne sais quois that makes strawberry salsa pleasantly surprising. My hubby was very skeptical with his first bite, but not 10 minutes later he had finished the whole bowl!

If you’re similarly unsure of whether strawberries have any place in a savory application, don’t be. (Remember my strawberry cucumber salad and strawberry vinaigrette? They’re guaranteed crowd-pleasers!) This fresh strawberry jalapeno salsa is certain to become your new favorite fast appetizer recipe!

    What does it taste like?

This fresh strawberry salsa is bright, juicy, and irresistibly refreshing. Overall, it tastes like a cross between a fruit salsa and a savory pico de gallo. The strawberries bring natural sweetness and a burst of summery flavor, while red onion gives the salsa just enough savory bite and crunch.

Fresh lime juice cuts through the sweetness with a pop of citrusy acidity, making the flavors feel light and vibrant while a drizzle of honey gently enhances the berry fruitiness without overpowering it. Cilantro adds a clean, herbaceous freshness, while jalapeño brings a gentle heat that lingers just enough to keep things interesting without overwhelming your palate.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Dip Recipe

    • Budget-Friendly – Despite tasting like it came from your favorite taqueria, I was able to make a batch of fresh strawberry salsa that costs just 55 cents a serving—and strawberries aren’t even in peak season yet!! Once they are, the cost will be even less.
    • Quick & Easy – All you need are 8 ingredients and 10 minutes of prep. Just chop, mix, taste, and voila!
    • Bright & Vibrant – Not only does strawberry pico de gallo add a bold pop of color to any table, it’s also packed with zippy flavor that’s guaranteed to make you do the food wiggle.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Fresh Strawberries – While I’m normally all for swapping in frozen fruit for fresh, this is one instance where fresh is the only way to go. Why? Frozen berries experience some cellular breakdown in the freezer, so when they defrost they’re mushier and wetter than you’d want for a pico-style salsa.
    • Red Onion – Red onion has a gorgeous magenta hue, a lightly crisp texture, and the perfect amount of piquancy.
    • Fresh Cilantro – A classic addition to nearly all salsa recipes!
    • Jalapeno – Feel free to dial up the heat by adding more, or keep it mild by using less. Also, remember that most of the spicy flavoring lives inside the seeds and white membranes of peppers, so carefully remove them before chopping if you’d like to keep the heat to a minimum.
    • Honey – A touch of honey helps macerate the berries and draws out their natural sweetness.
    • Lime – Fresh citrus is key for the best, brightest flavor. To get the most juice from your limes, roll them firmly on the counter for 10-15 seconds before slicing open and juicing.
    • Salt & Black Pepper – Just the basics!

    Substitutions

    • Fresh Strawberries – Feel free to swap in a mix of fresh raspberries and blueberries for a fun twist. Other alternatives include chopped fresh peaches, nectarines, kiwi, mango, or papaya.
    • Red Onion – Green onions or mild shallots would be my preferred alternatives. You can also swap in white onion for extra bite and crunch, or sweet yellow onions instead.
    • Fresh Cilantro – If you’re not a fan of cilantro, fresh parsley or mint would be great options.
    • Jalapeno – For a spicier take, use a serrano chili instead. They may be smaller, but they pack much more kick—10,000-23,000 Scoville heat units compared to jalepeños’ 2,500-8,000.
    • Honey – Agave nectar would also be great!
    • Lime – In a pinch, fresh lemon juice will do the trick.

    How To Make Strawberry Salsa

Step 1: Combine Ingredients. Add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl and gently toss until everything is evenly coated and well mixed.

Step 2: Rest. Let the salsa rest for 10-115 minutes so the flavors can meld and the juices release, then give it one more quick stir and dig in!fo.

    Optional Variations & Dietary Adjustments

    • Vegan – Swap the honey for agave nectar to keep your salsa fully plant-based.
    • Extra Spicy – Leave in the seeds and membranes, add more jalapeño, and/or swap in spicier serrano chiles instead.
    • Cheesy – Add crumbled feta or cotija for a salty, savory twist.
    • Strawberry Pineapple Salsa or Mango Strawberry Salsa –  Swap half of the strawberries for diced mango or pineapple to add a sunny, tropical flavor.
    • Spiced – Add a pinch of ground cumin or chili powder for a slightly smoky, savory depth that complements grilled meats and fish.

    Serving Suggestions

Serve this fresh strawberry salsa as a bright topping for blackened or grilled proteins (e.g. lemon pepper chicken or bang bang chicken skewers), where the sweet-heat contrast really shines. It’s also great spooned over spicy shrimp tacos or piled onto toasted crostini with a smear of cream cheese or goat cheese for an easy appetizer.

For a simple snack, serve it with salty tortilla chips or alongside sliced cucumbers and jicama for a refreshing, crunchy dip. You can also use it as a topping for avocado toast or grilled halloumi for an unexpected sweet-and-savory twist.

    Recipe Success Tips

    • Dice everything small and evenly. Smaller pieces help the flavors distribute evenly and make the strawberry pico de gallo easier to scoop or spoon.
    • Smell your berries. Take a whiff of the box at the store before buying—it should smell like strawberries. If you can’t catch a scent, your berries won’t taste like much.
    • Adjust sweetness to taste. Strawberries vary in sweetness, so start with a little honey and add more only if needed.
    • Control the heat. For less spice, remove the seeds and ribs from the jalapeño; for more heat, leave them in or add extra.
    • Let it rest—but not too long. A 10-15 minute rest time allows the flavors to meld without making the salsa too juicy.
    • Taste and re-season before serving. A final pinch of salt or squeeze of lime right before serving can really make the flavors pop.

    Storage Directions

    • Best Fresh: For the best texture and flavor, enjoy strawberry pico de gallo the same day it’s made, when the strawberries are freshest and the flavors are brightest.
    • Refrigeration: Store leftover strawberry salsa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Because fresh fruit releases juice over time, give the salsa a good stir before serving and drain off any excess liquid if needed.

    FAQs

How do you keep strawberry salsa from getting watery?

To keep strawberry salsa from getting watery, dice the strawberries evenly, lightly salt them after mixing, and let the salsa rest briefly. Using ripe (not overripe) strawberries and serving the salsa the same day also helps maintain the best texture. If needed, drain off excess juice before serving.

What main dishes pair well with strawberry salsa?

Strawberry salsa pairs especially well with grilled or simply seasoned proteins that let its sweet-tangy flavor shine. It’s delicious spooned over grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon, or white fish, and it also works beautifully with pork tenderloin or pork chops. For plant-based options, try it on grilled tofu, tempeh, or tucked into tacos with black beans and avocado.
