If you need a salad that disappears before the burgers are even off the grill, this is it. This watermelon cucumber feta salad hits every flavor note you want in summer — sweet, salty, cool, and refreshing — and it comes together in 15 minutes with almost no effort. It’s the salad I’m asked to bring to every single BBQ from June through August.

There’s something about the combination of juicy watermelon and salty feta that just works — it sounds unusual until you try it, and then you can’t stop thinking about it. The cucumber adds a cool, crisp crunch and the fresh mint brightens up every single bite. It’s the kind of salad that makes people ask for the recipe before they’ve finished their plate.

The honey-lime dressing is what pulls it all together. It’s just three ingredients whisked together in about 30 seconds, and it adds a bright, tangy sweetness that balances the saltiness of the feta perfectly. No fancy technique required — just whisk and toss.

This is also a great excuse to grab a second watermelon while you’re at the store. If you want more ways to use it up this summer, my Watermelon Popsicles and Homemade Watermelon Sorbet are both excellent next stops — sweet, frozen, and just as easy as this salad.

What Does Watermelon Feta Salad Taste Like?

This salad is the perfect balance of sweet and salty, with a cool crunch in every bite. The juicy watermelon brings natural sweetness, the crumbled feta adds a salty, creamy punch, and the cucumber keeps everything light and refreshing instead of heavy.

The fresh mint ties it all together with a bright, cooling quality that makes this salad taste like summer in a bowl. And the honey-lime dressing adds just enough tang to keep things interesting — sweet, salty, refreshing, and never one-note.

Why You’ll Love This Watermelon Cucumber Feta Salad

    • Ready in 15 minutes. No cooking required — just chop, whisk, and toss. One of the easiest side dishes you can make.
    • Sweet, salty, and refreshing all in one bowl. The perfect summer flavor combination that never feels heavy.
    • The ultimate BBQ and potluck salad. It travels well, feeds a crowd, and always disappears first.
    • Only $0.88 per serving. A genuinely budget-friendly way to feed a crowd at your next gathering.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Cubed watermelon — Use the ripest, sweetest watermelon you can find. Seedless is best here.
    • Diced cucumber — English or regular cucumber both work great here. It adds a cool, crisp crunch that balances the soft watermelon.
    • Crumbled feta cheese — The salty, creamy contrast to all that sweet watermelon. Buy a block and crumble it yourself for the best texture.
    • Fresh mint leaves — Chopped. This brings a bright, cooling freshness that makes the whole salad taste like summer.
    • Honey dressing — Just honey, avocado oil, and lime juice whisked together. Takes about 30 seconds and makes all the difference.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Goat cheese instead of feta — A creamier, tangier alternative that works beautifully with the sweet watermelon.
    • Add red onion — A few thin slices add a sharp, savory bite that balances the sweetness nicely.
    • Add arugula or baby spinach — Turns this into a more substantial salad with a little peppery bite.
    • Swap the dressing — My Homemade Balsamic Vinaigrette is a delicious alternative if you want a different flavor profile entirely.
    • Add nuts — Toasted almonds or pistachios add a satisfying crunch and a little extra richness.
    • Add strawberries — Swap in a cup of sliced strawberries for some of the watermelon for an extra burst of sweetness. If you love that combo, you’ll also love my Strawberry Cucumber Salad.

How to Make Watermelon Cucumber Feta Salad

    • Step 1: Make the dressing. Stir together the honey, avocado oil, and lime juice in a small bowl and set aside.
    • Step 2: Toss the base. Add the watermelon and cucumber to a large bowl and toss with the honey dressing until evenly coated.
    • Step 3: Top and serve. Sprinkle with crumbled feta and fresh mint leaves, then serve immediately!

    Recipe Tips

    • Use ripe, in-season watermelon. The sweetness of a really good watermelon makes all the difference in this recipe.
    • Dress right before serving. Watermelon releases juice over time, and the salad gets watery if it sits dressed for too long.
    • Use fresh mint, not dried. Dried mint won’t give you the same bright, cooling flavor that makes this salad special.
    • Crumble the feta yourself from a block. It’s creamier and less dry than pre-crumbled feta.

    What to Serve it With

Not sure what to pair with this salad? Here are some of my favorite combinations:

    • Grilled chicken margherita — My Grilled Chicken Margherita and this salad make one of my favorite easy summer dinners.
    • Burgers and hot dogs — The perfect BBQ side. Light and refreshing alongside the heavier grilled mains.
    • Bang bang chicken skewers — My Grilled Bang Bang Chicken Skewers bring just enough heat to make this cool, refreshing salad the perfect contrast.
    • Potluck spreads — This salad travels well and holds its own next to pasta salads, deviled eggs, and all the other potluck classics — just bring the dressing separately and toss it on right before serving.
    • As a light snack — It’s filling and refreshing enough to stand completely on its own.

How to Store Watermelon Cucumber Feta Salad

    • Store undressed if possible. Keep the dressing separate until you’re ready to serve — this is the best way to prevent a watery salad.
    • Refrigerator: The dressed salad will keep in an airtight container for up to 1 day. The watermelon will release more liquid the longer it sits.
    • Not freezer-friendly. This watermelon salad doesn’t hold up to freezing.
    • Make-ahead tip: Cube the watermelon and dice the cucumber ahead of time and store separately in the fridge. Toss with dressing and add the feta and mint right before serving.

Is Watermelon Cucumber Feta Salad Healthy?

Yes — watermelon cucumber feta salad is one of the healthiest, most hydrating salads you can make. At just 110 calories per serving, it’s also a genuinely low-calorie summer salad. Here’s the full breakdown per serving:

    • Calories: 110 calories
    • Carbohydrates: 18 grams
    • Protein: 3 grams
    • Total Fat: 4 grams
    • Sodium: 88 mg
    • Fiber: 1 gram

A lot of people wonder what watermelon and cucumber actually do for your body, and the honest answer is: quite a lot. Both are over 90% water, which makes this salad genuinely hydrating — a real bonus on a hot summer day. Cucumber also adds vitamin K and its own set of antioxidants.

So, is it good to eat cucumber and watermelon together? Absolutely. They’re nutritionally complementary, both hydrating, and the combination of textures and flavors is part of what makes this salad so satisfying. The feta does add most of the sodium in this recipe — at 88mg per serving it’s still well within a healthy range, but if you’re watching your sodium intake, using a smaller amount is an easy adjustment.

    Pricing Info

This is what I personally paid to make this recipe:

    • 3 tbsp honey: $0.36
    • 1 tbsp avocado oil: $0.21
    • 1 tbsp lime juice: $0.10
    • 6 cups cubed watermelon: $1.40
    • 2 cups diced cucumber: $0.78
    • ⅓ cup crumbled feta cheese: $0.77
    • 3 tbsp chopped fresh mint leaves: $1.65

The total comes out to be around $5.27 or roughly $0.88 per serving.

Compare that to a similar salad as a side dish at a restaurant ($10–14 a plate) and you’re feeding 6 people for less than the cost of one restaurant serving. Watermelon is also at its cheapest and best in peak summer, so this salad gets even more budget-friendly when you make it in season.

    FAQs

What dressing goes on watermelon feta salad?

A simple honey-lime dressing is the classic pairing — just honey, oil, and fresh lime juice whisked together. It balances the sweetness of the watermelon with a bright, tangy edge. Balsamic vinaigrette is a popular alternative if you want a deeper, more savory flavor profile instead.

Can you make watermelon feta salad ahead of time?

Yes — with one important rule: keep the dressing separate until you’re ready to serve. You can cube the watermelon and dice the cucumber up to a day ahead and store them separately in the fridge. Toss everything together with the dressing and add the feta and mint right before serving for the best texture.

Why is my watermelon salad watery?

Watermelon is over 90% water, so it naturally releases liquid once it’s cut and dressed — this is completely normal. To minimize it, pat the watermelon and cucumber dry with a paper towel before tossing, and always dress the salad right before serving rather than letting it sit.

What goes well with watermelon and feta?

Fresh mint, lime juice, and a touch of honey are the classic flavor pairings with watermelon and feta — all three appear in this recipe for good reason. Cucumber adds a refreshing crunch, while red onion or arugula are popular additions if you want to build out the salad even further.
