Brownie crinkle cookies from scratch have a deep chocolate flavor, are incredibly soft and chewy, and are made with 100% whole wheat flour. They’re the perfect holiday cookie!

Holiday baking is one of my favorite things to do! Every year, my husband and I bake a ton of cookies and give them out in cookie boxes to our family and friends!

If you follow a similar holiday tradition, love Christmas cookie baking, or just simply need a chocolate cookie that everyone will love, then these brownie crinkle cookies are perfect!

They’re 100% whole wheat, so they’re just healthy enough to be guilt-free, but are so delicious and chocolatey, no one will even know they’re healthy at all!

With only 8 simple ingredients and 15 minutes, you’ll have a batch of these brownie crinkle cookies cooling in no time!

    What do brownie crinkle cookies taste like?

    These brownie crinkle cookies are incredibly soft, slightly chewy, and have the perfect amount of sweetness. Because this cookie recipe calls for one cup of cocoa powder, they have an incredibly deep chocolate flavor that makes them irresistible! They will satisfy your sweet tooth for both brownies and holiday cookies!

    Ingredients

    The ingredients needed to make brownie crinkle cookies.

    Cocoa powder – Because these chocolate crinkle cookies call for one cup of cocoa powder, this ingredient gives them an incredibly deep and dark chocolate flavor! Make sure to use 100% unsweetened cocoa powder.

    Coconut sugar – I love using this sugar in chocolate recipes because the chocolate hides the darkness of the sugar. It’s also less processed than white or brown sugar, making it ideal for healthier cookies.

    Baking powder – The one and only leavening agent, definitely don’t skip the baking powder.

    Avocado oil – This oil has such a mild flavor and gives these chocolate cookies so much moisture. Plus, avocado oil is very heart-healthy and is great for baking!

    Eggs – These help hold the brownie crinkle cookies together as they bake.

    Vanilla extract – Just to deepen the flavor even more, you’re going to use two teaspoons of vanilla extract to take these cookies to another level.

    Whole wheat pastry flour – The absolute best whole wheat flour to make cookies with! Whole wheat pastry flour is fine enough to give baked goods a fluffy texture, while still retaining the nutrition from the grain.

    Organic powdered sugar – Organic powdered sugar is typically made with tapioca flour and raw cane sugar instead of corn starch and granulated sugar. This makes it a much healthier and less processed version of classic powdered sugar.

    Substitutions

    Coconut sugar – Any type of granulated sugar will work in this recipe! White sugar, raw cane sugar, and even a little brown sugar will all work nicely, but may make the cookies a little sweeter!

    Avocado oil – Canola or olive oil are the best alternatives to avocado oil in these cookies.

    Eggs – Flax eggs will work just fine in this recipe. You can make flaxseed eggs by mixing two tablespoons of ground flaxseed with four tablespoons of water and setting it aside for about 5 minutes, allowing it to gel up.

    Whole wheat pastry flour – Regular pastry flour or all-purpose flour would work great instead of whole wheat pastry flour, it just wouldn’t quite have as much fiber or nutrition.

    Organic powdered sugar – Regular powdered sugar or unsweetened coconut shreds make great alternatives to organic powdered sugar. If using coconut shreds, you will naturally add a tiny bit of texture and coconut flavor, but your brownie crinkle cookies will still turn out delicious!

    Instructions

    • A mixing bowl with the ingredients needed for brownie crinkle cookies.

    1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine the cocoa powder, coconut sugar, oil, eggs, vanilla, and baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Mix until there are no clumps of coconut sugar left and everything is smooth.
    2. Stir in the whole wheat pastry flour until just combined, don’t overmix!
    3. Roll dough into 1.5 inch balls and roll in organic powdered sugar (or unsweetened coconut shreds). Place on a lined baking sheet 2 inches apart, and flatten slightly.
    4. Bake in a preheated oven for 9-10 minutes. Allow to cool, then serve!

    Tips & FAQ

    Why are they called crinkle cookies?

    They’re called crinkle cookies because of the crinkle and cracks they get while baking in the oven. The cracks are formed because of the powdered sugar “cracking” apart as the cookies rise and bake.

    Do I need to refrigerate and chill the cookie dough?

    For this brownie crinkle cookie recipe, you do not need to chill the dough first. They will roll, bake, and crinkle just fine without chilling the dough beforehand.

    Can I freeze my chocolate crinkle cookies?

    Yes, you can! Make sure to bake your cookies first, then allow them to cool. You can vacuum pack them or place them in an air-tight container for up to 3 months in the freezer!

    Nutritional Info

    These healthy chocolate crinkle cookies from scratch are 100% whole wheat, fairly low in sugar compared to other cookies, and are higher in fiber, too!

    They’re also very low in salt because they don’t have any salt added! The only sodium in them comes from the baking powder, which doesn’t add too much at 62 mg of sodium per cookie!

    The best part about these chocolate crinkle cookies is that they are made from scratch, which gives you complete control over the ingredients!

    • Protein: 2 grams
    • Sodium: 62 mg
    • Carbohydrates: 26 grams
    • Fiber: 3 grams

    • ½ cup avocado oil: $2.16

    • 2 tsp vanilla extract: $0.52
    • 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour: $0.23

    The total that a batch of 18 brownie crinkle cookies will likely cost is around $7.08 or roughly $0.39 per cookie. You can lower the cost significantly if you use a less expensive sugar like white granulated sugar and a lower-cost oil like canola.
